Mindful Eating
Our food is medicine that sustains the health of our bodies and minds. All the nutrients, vitamins, fats and amino acids we need, we can get from food. What we eat largely creates what we are, especially our internal biomes such as the gut lining. The vagus nerve, which extends from the gut to the brain, is the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system and plays a critical role in the functioning of the parasympathetic nervous system that controls the lungs, heart, and digestion. It is a two-way channel of communication between the brain and the rest of the body, primarily the gut. Thanks to the vagus nerve, the health of our gut affects our overall health and functioning. Hence, what we put in our bodies is far more important than satisfying hunger and providing fuel.
I believe that there’s no singular diet for every person. Your diet is highly individual and needs to correspond with your DNA and lifestyle. What’s most important, within one’s parameters, is mindfully choosing ingredients, noting where they come from and how they were made. Eating local and seasonal is the way we were meant to eat, as our ancestors did. In our modern world, it’s difficult to do this 100% of the time, but setting local, seasonal, and organically grown as our goal, even if it’s 25%, is a step in a positive direction for both our health and the environment. What’s even better, is growing food organically yourself as well as informed wild foraging. So many of the plants that surround us are full of nutrients and have deep ancestral medicinal qualities.
With my master’s degree in gastronomic sciences and years of experience on organic farms and in restaurants, I’m here to help you navigate the waters of mindful eating with a deep consciousness of what we put in our bodies- a critical piece of wellness.
