“Meditation practice isn’t about trying to throw ourselves away and become something better, it’s about befriending who we are.”
Pema Chodron
Mindfulness
Living mindfully strengthens our connection to ourselves and our environment. As outlined by Laurie J. Cameron in “Everyday Mindfulness: Finding Focus, Calm, and Joy,” the ten qualities of mindfulness are: awareness, a beginner’s mind, acceptance, insight, impermanence, equanimity, interconnection, compassion, gratitude, and joy. These principals ground us in the fullness of the human experience. Meditation and breathwork, known as pranayama or “life force” in yoga, are two main methods of practicing mindfulness. Observing and playing with the mind and breath can change the way we live and see the world.
Our thoughts sculpt our brains, and therefore, our perception of reality. With mindfulness, we can learn to respond to the world with gratitude instead of reacting from a place of pain, hate or fear. Living, acting, and speaking with intention based on the balance of kindness and truth can open up a whole new world of existence. Living with loving-kindness for first the self, and then those around you, will help you keep your cup full and give you the tools to fill it up again when it spills.
“Mindfulness involves the skillful use of attention to both your inner and outer worlds. Since your brain learns mainly from what you attend to, mindfulness is the doorway to taking in good experiences and making them part of yourself.”
